The real shocker drops when you decide to google anything about the lives of students, especially in universities and colleges. Perhaps the majority of the Kenyan population know college and university students as dedicated and well-trained culprits in the art of Organised Strikes that are geared at expressing their dislike for education. The rest of the population I believe either cannot develop an interest or altogether are not aware of the existence of the students. Be it as it may, the Google search result for ‘problems facing Kenyan university and college students will leave you believing increasing costs of attendance, the resulting impact on student behaviour and actions and regular closure of the universities and colleges as the real threats facing the study life of these students.
While all these might be so true to most parents, junior students, and the rest of the world, a majority of the university and college students may have a completely different say on the matter. First of all, indeed the challenges stated above are strongly felt at the university and college levels. The perspective, however, is not that of the students, but that of the state and parents at large. It is a look at how these two entities consider the challenges that are worth considering about their students’ in university and colleges. But what about the students themselves? How do they feel about the problems facing their lives in these institutions?
It will take a literal university and college graduate to clearly articulate these problems categorically. A first-hand experience in such matters will revolutionize how the university and college life is perceived. The whole new perspective begins with high school graduates who are destined to become students at prestigious universities and colleges. Before joining, they are normally informed to make informed decisions about the institutions they want to join. The concern here is not to pick those institutions that manifest all the above-mentioned challenges. It is a common belief among this sect that the real threat in universities and colleges is HIV/AIDS. The incumbent students at this stage normally welcome fierce warnings from parents and the church about worrying sex trends that turn many students to early parents or worse; HIV victims. If you are keen, you may have noted the shift in perspective and general concern from the parents and society.
Soon after joining the various institutions, the new freshmen slowly discover that not only was the full scope of their problems not defined but that efforts were seriously forged towards the wrong concern. The average student is more concerned about sleeping hungry than getting infected with HIV/AIDS. What’s more, they now have to worry about how to manage their lives outside classed without any intervention or help. Managing their financials, their time allocated to studying, their involvement in parties, attending church services, and trying as much as they can not to ‘die of hunger or boredom’ become the major concern of these students. The perspective entirely changes and problem definition earlier created in their brains suddenly needs a thorough review. To the average student, it is the little things that encompass the CAMPUS LIFE that matters. It is the neglect of these little things that slowly mess their lives and lead to far more devastating problems like strikes and so on.
